Meta Files An Appeal After Messenger And Marketplace Appointed As Gatekeepers

JAKARTA Two platforms from Meta, Messenger and Marketplace, were designated as gatekeepers obtained by the European Commission. However, Meta fought against the decision and filed an appeal.

To The Verge, Meta Spokesman Chris Sgro said that the two services could not be categorized as gatekeepers. According to him, Messenger and Marketplace do not meet the requirements stipulated in the Digital Market Act (DMA).

Meta's actions this time were inversely proportional to his statements some time ago. In a Reuters report,Meta said that they would not challenge the appointment of a gatekeeper to the hashtag Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp not being appointed.

However, Meta remains against in the end. They disagree with the European Commission's decision and may object to complying with the rules of neutrality and openness to its two services.

Appointed as a gatekeeper, Messenger must be operated with other messaging services and the marketplace must comply with a series of rules set by the DMA to protect its merchants.

In fact, these two platforms have met the requirements when viewed from the number of users, but Meta is still against it. According to the company, Messenger and Marketplace should be excluded for other reasons.

Meta explains that Messenger is Facebook's built-in feature and does not stand alone. Meanwhile, Marketplace is a service from consumers to consumers without Meta interference in the middle.

For these two reasons, Meta hopes its two platforms can be excluded. The company is rushing to file an appeal as the European Commission provides a deadline until Friday, November 17.

After the appeal is filed, the European Commission will review Messenger and Marketplace again. Reportedly, the European Commission will announce its decision in the coming months.
