Kominfo Will Create A Social Media Supervisory Board With UNESCO

JAKARTA - Two weeks ago, Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie Setiadi admitted to meeting with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

During the meeting, the Minister of Communication and Information admitted that UNESCO proposed the formation of a social media council, or commonly known as social media conference.

"UNESCO met us two weeks ago, they proposed social media conference, or social media council," Budi told the media crew after the launch of the national public information service, info.go.id.

According to Budi, problems related to content spread on social media do not only occur in Indonesia. Rather, the anxiety that is also felt by everyone around the world.

The so-called institution will become an institution such as the clearing house will later have a spirit like the press council. Where they will review whether a content is appropriate to share on social media or not.

"Spiritnya kayak dewan pers. Bukan mengawasi, Dewan sosial media ini akhirnya adalah semacam lembaga clearing house, ini enggak enggaknya ditampilkan di sosmed? Ok enggak?" jelas Budi.

In addition, Budi also explained that if this concept was implemented, the social media council would not only contain the government, but also academics, religious leaders, and also social media actors.

"This social media council must participate in the community, not just the government. So there must be a joint commitment from all levels of society, religious leaders, academics, journalists," he added.

In addition to the establishment of the Social Media Council, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics is also formulating a revision of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE) to create a secure digital space for the community.

"Our commitment is to protect children in the digital space, and the article on child protection in this digital space will be included in the revision of the ITE Law," he concluded.
