JAKARTA - Apple announced Apple TV's software update with tvOS 17, with the FaceTime feature scheduled for release in the fall or around the end of the year.

With this update, Apple TV 4K users can not only watch interesting TV shows, but can also have conversations with family and friends.

"TvOS 17 is changing the biggest screen at home with FaceTime and new video conferencing capabilities, giving Apple TV 4K users the ability to easily connect with anyone directly from their family space," said Bob Borchers, Apple's vice president for Product Marketing Worldwide in an announcement during WWDC 2023.

So, starting this fall, users of Apple TV 4K will be able to take advantage of the new FaceTime app on Apple TV and start a direct call from Apple TV, or start a call on iPhone or iPad, and forward it to Apple TV.

FaceTime on Apple TV leverages Continuity Camera support to connect wirelessly to the user's iPhone or iPad, and leverages the device's camera and microphone to bring participants together on TV.

Furthermore, Apple also introduced Split View for Apple TV which allows users to enjoy watching shows or movies with their loved ones during the SharePlay session while also watching everyone on FaceTime calls.

Furthermore, by the end of this year, video conferencing apps like Webex by Cisco and Zoom will launch on tvOS, bringing their communication capabilities to Apple TV 4K.

Developers can take advantage of the Shelf-Registered Camera API on Apple TV 4K to integrate iPhone or iPad cameras and microphones into their tvOS app, and create new and immersive entertainment experiences for the living room.
