YOGYAKARTA Profile of Herry IP has drawn the spotlight after PBSI officially changed its position as head coach in the badminton men's doubles sector. Then who is he really?

Herry Iman Pierngadi or familiarly called Herry IP is a badminton coach who was born on August 21, 1962 in Pangkal Pinang, Bangka Belitung Islands. His expertise in coaching badminton athletes made him nicknamed the Coach of Naga Api.

His coaching career began when he was a coach at the Tangkas club in 1989. After four years of running, he moved to the National Council of the Indonesian Badminton Association or PBSI (1993) who became the Pratama coach at the Cipayung National Training Center (pelatnas). Until 1999, he was promoted to men's doubles coach in Cipayung. Since then he has succeeded in producing men's doubles athletes who are recognized by the world.

Several badminton athletes who have been trained by Herry IP such as Chandra Wijaya, Tony Gunawan, Sigit Budiarto, Flandy Limpele, Eng Hian. Meanwhile, young athletes who have felt their cold hands are Kevin Sanjaya, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, Hendra Setiawan, and Mohammad Ahsan.

Behind his success in training world-class athletes, coach Herry IP is dubbed the title Coach Naga Api. The nickname did not come from Indonesia.

In the documentary film uploaded by Gabriel Luciana on his Youtube channel, Herry IP told how the nickname started for him. According to his confession, Herry himself did not know the reason why there was the nickname Naga Api because the name was actually made by Badminton Lovers (BL) from China.

"Because indeed if it's a dragon, in China it's the most powerful. My target is to give the name Coach Naga Api from China. Because we have a lot of competitions in China," explained Herry IP, quoted Friday, August 1.

Responding to the nickname Herry did not mind, he even enjoyed the designation which until now continues to be identical to himself.

The nickname Dragon Api is indeed deemed appropriate for Herry IP. Because many of his students managed to win world-class achievements. Some of the successful are as follows.

As mentioned earlier, the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has appointed Herry Iman Pierngadi to be the mixed doubles head coach at the Cipayung National Training Center. The replacement was announced on Friday, September 1, 2023.

Herry IP has also agreed to the new responsibilities he has carried out. He is said to be preparing a training program soon, including choosing who will be the assistant coach.

"Herry, who is already very experienced, is expected to be able to divide his knowledge in mixed doubles so that Rehan/Lisa and friends can achieve again," PBSI wrote in a statement.
