High Motorcycle Accidents In Indonesia And Important Tips For Drivers

JAKARTA - The number of traffic accidents involving motorbikes in Indonesia has increased, as revealed by the Director of Security and Safety of the Traffic Corps of the Indonesian National Police (Dirkamsel Korlantas Polri).

Data shows that the number of victims of motorcycle accidents per day in 2023 is actually higher than in 2022. Although the majority of victims suffered only minor injuries, the death toll in motorcycle accidents reached 17-22 percent, which means every five cases of motorcycle accidents can cause at least one death.

In dealing with this situation, Hariadi, Assistant Department of Service of PT SIS, admits that motorcycles are a very popular vehicle in Indonesia. Therefore, it is very important for motorcyclists to understand how to reduce the risk of accidents.

"Motorcycles have become an integral part of people's daily lives. This is one of the most practical and efficient vehicles to overcome traffic jams in urban areas. Therefore, it is very important to anticipate the risk of accidents," he said, in an official statement received by VOI, Thursday, October 5.

Here are some steps drivers can take to maintain their safety before driving:

Using Safety Equipment: It is important to use proper safety equipment, such as helmets with official standards, jackets, gloves, comfortable shoes, and other equipment to protect the body.

Recognizing and Obeying Traffic Rules: It is important to understand types of traffic signs, such as warnings, command signs, prohibitions, instructions, and additional signs as a means of communication on the highway. Knowing and complying with traffic rules is the key to reducing the risk of accidents.

Stay Focused: Make sure that you are not sleepy before driving. Driving in drowsiness can reduce your focus. Avoid also using your phone or listening to music with your earphone while driving, because this can disturb your attention to the surrounding environment.

Checking Vehicles Periodically: Checking the condition of the vehicle periodically is the responsibility of each vehicle owner. This helps keep the vehicle in prime condition for daily use.

Hariadi also reminded the importance of public awareness about driving safety and reducing the risk of motorcycle accidents. By paying attention to these steps, it is hoped that it can help reduce the risk of motorcycle accidents in Indonesia.
