Mazda Records Best PHEV Sales In The US, MX-30 Less Lucky

JAKARTA - Mazda, although late in electrification, achieved quite good sales in the United States (US) market. In August 2023, Mazda North American Operations reported vehicle sales of 30,174 units, an increase of 19 percent compared to the previous year.

However, attention is focused on their Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) lineup. In August, Mazda recorded the best PHEV sales achievement ever in the US.

Reporting from InsideEVs, Sunday, September 3, Mazda CX-90 PHEV became the star of their electrification sales. During August, PHEV's CX-90 managed to boost Mazda's sales by 1,700 units or accounted for 5.6 percent of their total sales.

However, the sale of Mazda's first EV model, namely MX-30, was not as lucky as the CX-90 PHEV. Only 6 units of MX-30 were sold during August, and finally Mazda decided to stop producing this model after 2023.

For eight months, Mazda recorded sales of 244,586 units, which are a combination of an internal combustion engine (ICE) model with electrification, an increase of 28 percent compared to the previous year.

Of the total 244,586 units, 3,843 of them were donated by Mazda CX-90 PHEV, while only 100 units were for the MX-30 model in the US.

Although introduced two years ago, Mazda MX-30's sales in the US have never reached 1,000 units, only 605 units.

Mazda CX-90 PHEV is designed specifically for the US market with a wide dimension, three rows, and high efficiency. This vehicle combines 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engines with electric motors, generating 323 dk of power and 500 Nm of torque.

The CX-90 PHEV is also increased in efficiency with a 17.8 kWh battery which allows vehicles to run up to 42 km with electric power only.

Mazda plans to focus on selling PHEV in the short term as they switch to full electric mobility. They will also launch a CX-70 PHEV and release hybrid cars such as the CX-50 Hybrid in the future.

Mazda's commitment to expand the electric vehicle segment (BEV) will be seen through more electrification models scheduled for release between 2028 and 2030.
