Toyota Announces Recall Of 168,000 Pickup Trucks Due To Fire Risk

Toyota Tundra is one of the best-selling pickup trucks in the United States (US). Toyota managed to sell 32,084 Tundra units during the second quarter of 2023, compared to 21,673 units in both 2022. This shows a significant increase in percentage of 48.16%.

Unfortunately, Toyota has just announced a recall of about 168,000 pickup trucks in the United States due to the possible fire risk. The affected Tundra model is production in 2022 and 2023. This recall was carried out because there was a problem with the plastic fuel hose on the truck which could potentially leak.

This problem likely arises when the plastic fuel hose comes into contact with adjacent brake lanes. Under certain conditions, contact between the hose and the brake line can cause a leak of fuel, which in turn can be a source of thickening and potentially cause a fire.

Citing an official statement from the Japanese automaker, quoted from Carscoops, August 16, Toyota will replace the plastic fuel hose on each affected truck with an "improved" section and provide a new cluster. However, this statement does not explain in detail how these enhanced components differ from the previous one.

The new clamp is claimed to be an additional safety measure to prevent direct contact between the fuel hose and the brake line.

Interestingly, this "enhanced" part is not yet ready for overall use. Therefore, Toyota will reduce security risks by instructing dealers to install "protective materials" while final parts are available. And more importantly, this process will not charge the affected pickup truck owners any fees.

Toyota is committed to informing truck owners affected by this recall until October this year. However, the unclear information is how Toyota is aware of this potential security issue without any official documents publicly accessible from the NHTSA (United States National Highway Safety Agency) for now.

Usually, the recall document commonly released by the agency includes information about what caused this problem and whether there was an accident or injury that had occurred as a result.
