Prabowo Visits Egypt, Gibran Appointed As Acting President

JAKARTA President Prabowo Subianto visited Cairo, Egypt, to attend the D-8 Summit on December 17, 2024. During the visit, Prabowo appointed Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka as the President's acting (Plt).

Gibran's appointment as Acting President is stated in Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 34 of 2024 concerning Assignment of Vice President to Carry out Presidential Duties. This Presidential Decree was signed by Prabowo on Monday 16 December.

"Assigns the Vice President to carry out his daily duties in accordance with the provisions of the legislation while the President carries out state visits, official visits, and working visits to Egypt and the D-8 High Level Conference on 17 to 19 December 2024 or until the date the person concerned arrives back in the country," the Presidential Decree said.

During this assignment period, Gibran was required to consult and ask for approval from President Prabowo to establish a strategic policy that required an immediate decision. In addition, Gibran must report the results of his duties after Prabowo returns to Indonesia.

"If within the assignment period a new policy needs to be determined immediately, the Vice President as the executor of the President's duties must first consult and ask for the President's approval," the Presidential Decree reads.

"After the President returns to the country, the assignment ends and the Vice President immediately reports the implementation of the task to the President," continued the Presidential Decree.

In addition to attending the D-8 Summit, Prabowo is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Not only that, he will attend a number of informal meetings with economic and industrial figures in Egypt.

After completing a visit to Egypt, Prabowo is scheduled to stop in Malaysia to meet with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
