Elephants Injured In The Gardens Of Bener Meriah Aceh Residents, BKSDA Giring Out While Monitoring

JAKARTA - The Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) handled a Sumatran elephant (elephas maximus sumtranus) in a state of injury that entered a resident's garden in Bener Meriah Regency.

Head of the Aceh BKSDA Ujung Wisnu Barata said the BKSDA team had gone down to the location to deal with the elephant's injuries. When, the team continued to monitor the condition of the male elephant.

"The team has handled the injured elephant and directed it away from the residents' gardens. Currently, the team is intensively monitoring the development of the protected animal condition," he said in Banda Aceh, Monday, December 16, which was confiscated by Antara.

Ujang said the location of the injured elephant entering the resident's garden was at KM 42, Antara State Village, Pintu Rime Gayo District, Bener Meriah Regency, Sunday, December 15.

The adult elephant was injured on the right leg. The wound is thought to be because the protected animal is walking on a hard and sharp object. The residents' gardens that were entered by the protected animals were close to residential areas.

"The team has also carried the elephant from gardens and community settlements to prevent negative interactions between protected animals and humans," said Ujang.

He also invited the community to jointly carry out efforts to preserve elephants and other protected animals from the threat of extinction. As well as prevent conflicts with humans.

Efforts to prevent negative interaction between elephants and humans include installing and maintaining barriers such as shock wires so that elephants do not enter community plantations. As well as monitoring the movement of these protected animals.

"We are also making other mitigation efforts in preventing negative interactions such as installing GPS or position-determining tools. Installation of this GPS is an effort to strengthen mitigation in terms of early notification or early warning," said Ujang.

Sumatran elephants are protected wildlife. Referring to the list of The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, Sumatran elephants are only found on the island of Sumatra with critically endangered species, at high risk of extinction in the wild.

The BKSDA appealed to the community to jointly preserve nature, especially the Sumatran elephant wildlife by not destroying forests that are habitats of various types of animals, and not capturing, injuring, killing.

In addition, it also does not store, own, maintain, transport, and trade protected animals alive or dead and does not install snares or toxins that can cause death.

All negative acts against protected wildlife that can be subject to criminal sanctions in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
