YOGYAKARTA - The Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (DKP) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is testing the operation of Gesing Beach Fish Landing Port (PPI), in Panggang District, Gunungkidul Regency.

Head of the DIY Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service (DKP) Bayu Mukti Sasongka said the trial was carried out ahead of the planned inauguration of the second largest fish port in Gunungkidul in early 2024.

"Now we have started testing. If it will be good later, we will launch no problems," said Bayu as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, November 20.

Bayu said that in the early stages of the trial, DKP DIY checked the feasibility of the depth of the pond by deploying two to three fishing boats.

Based on the results of preliminary testing, a number of areas are still found in the port pool which require dredging because there are still remnants of violent rock explosions in the pool area.

"There are still a few spots that need to be dredged again, because the remnants of the sinking (rock explosion) were affected by the waves and carried by the current into the port pool," he said.

However, Bayu is optimistic that the inauguration of the Gesing Beach PPI can still be carried out according to the target in the first quarter of 2024.

"Trials are still being handled by contractors in the maintenance period which is estimated until the end of the first quarter of 2024," he said.

According to Bayu, when it officially operates in early 2024, the port, which is projected to be a "tourism fishing port" or tourism-based fishing port, will be able to accommodate up to 40 ships with a capacity of 10 to 30 grosses (GT), as well as an outboard motorboat of up to 100 units.

The Head of Capture Fisheries DKP DIY Catur Nur Amin is optimistic that in the future the port will be able to contribute 5,000 tons of fishing fish per year in DIY.

In 2022, fishing production in DIY will be recorded at 7,072 tons or 100.12 percent of the target.
