Student Case Beaten By Security During Unras, Mataram Police Leave Settlement To Campus

The Mataram City Police gave Mataram University, West Nusa Tenggara, the opportunity to resolve cases of alleged student abuse by a number of security unit officers during a demonstration in mid-June 2023. "So, the rector has asked to resolve the issue internally. We will give the opportunity for it," said Mataram Police Chief Kombes Mustofa in Mataram, Antara, Monday, October 2. The consideration of the Mataram Police gave this opportunity to see the locus and motives of the alleged abuse case. According to him, the campus has a big responsibility in solving the problem. Nevertheless, Mustofa emphasized that the report on the alleged abuse of Unram students is still being handled by the Mataram Police Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim). In fact, the handling of the case is currently underway at the investigation stage. "Keep the process while I haven't SP3 (the order to terminate the investigation). So, the case is still ongoing," he said. If the campus stated that it could not resolve it internally, Mustofa had already stated to the campus that the Mataram Police would continue the legal process. "That's what I'm waiting for. If the campus says it can't solve the problem internally, we will continue the legal process," he said. The alleged abuse during student demonstrations in front of the Unram Rectorate Building was recorded in several videos circulating on social media. One of them in the 25-second video was recorded by a number of campus security unit officers who forcibly secured a demonstration participant. Officers dragged the student into the Unram Rectorate Building. In the action, it appeared that a man wearing a blue batik pattern secretly from behind hit him with a hard object that made the victim fall.

The students held a demonstration in front of the Unram Rectorate Building by bringing a number of demands, one of which questioned the reason why the campus set the registration fee for new students for the independent route of Rp. 500 thousand.
