SPN is a military defense strategy that uses Indonesia's geography as an archipelagic country to be able to become a national defense that protects the entire territory of the Republic of Indonesia. The TNI Commander said Indonesia's strategic value for many national interests in the world causes the defense strategy of the archipelago to have a far-forward, technologically oriented, outward looking, and refer to the dynamics of the strategic environment to find out the opportunities that can be empowered, including the factual and potential threats that must be faced to ensure national defense and security conditions. Thus the readiness and preparedness of defense forces to become critical success factors for a large nation in maintaining national interests is survival, namely the safety of the nation and the sovereignty of the country. Yudo said that SPN in essence is a state defense military strategy that combines the Great Island Strategy (TNI AD), the Nusantara Sea Defense Strategy/SPLN (TNI AL), and the Archipelago Archipelago Air Strategy/SUKN (TNI AU) into a unity of a comprehensive military strategy to maintain the sovereignty, integrity and safety of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
