Chairman Of The Indonesian House Of Representatives Calls The State Responsible For Victims Of Sexual Violence

JAKARTA - The chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, emphasized that the state is responsible for victims of sexual abuse and violence, including the provision of health protection and services.

"Victims of sexual violence are the responsibility of the state, including their protection and health services, so as not to add to the burden on the victims," said Puan in her official statement in Jakarta, Friday.

Puan highlighted the importance of the government's role in improving health services, especially for victims of the Crime of Sexual Violence (TPKS).

BPJS Kesehatan's decision that does not guarantee health services for victims of sexual harassment and violence has caused controversy. The insecurities of health services for victims of these crimes have been regulated in Presidential Regulation Number 82 of 2018 Article 52 paragraph 1.

Puan encourages cooperation between the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) and BPJS to ensure that the transition of responsibility does not sacrifice the quality of health services for victims. The goal is for victims to continue to receive quality medical treatment without additional burdens.

Through Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning TPKS, Puan emphasized that the DPR will continue to oversee every service for victims of sexual violence to ensure safe and fair treatment and protection.

Puan emphasized the importance of cooperation between all parties in handling sensitive issues such as sexual violence. She invited all parties involved to pay attention to improving health services for victims of sexual violence.

The DPR also supports the strengthening of LPSK to provide the necessary assistance to victims, including medical, psychological, and legal support.

Puan emphasized that approaches to the protection of victims of violence and persecution must be holistic, including psychological support, rehabilitation, and social recovery.

The DPR is also committed to supporting education and awareness related to criminal acts of violence and persecution as part of efforts to eradicate crimes of sexual violence.
