JAKARTA - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati warned of the threat of crop failure due to rainsheds due to the positive El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomenon which resulted in drought.

"Local governments need to carry out mitigation actions and immediate preparedness actions. Farming land is at risk of experiencing puso, aka crop failure due to lack of water supply during the plant growth phase," said Dwikorita as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, July 21.

According to him, the phenomenon of El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole has the potential to disrupt national food security.

In the fisheries sector, he continued, changes in sea temperature and current patterns during El Nino and the Positive IOD that cool, usually have the potential to increase fish catch.

"The opportunity from this condition must be utilized because it can support national food security," he said.

Dwikorita said the phenomenon of El Nino and Positive IOD strengthen each other so that this year's dry season can become drier and rainfall in the low to very low category.

If usually the rainfall ranges from 20 mm per day, he said, then this dry season the figure becomes once a month or even no rain at all.

The peak of this dry dry drought, he said, is predicted to occur in August to early September with conditions that will be much drier than in 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Based on observations made by BMKG, the El Nino index in July reached 1.01 with a moderate level, while the IOD has entered a positive level index.

From June to the first basis of July, El Nino was still at a weak level so the impact had not been felt. However, after that, at the same time El Nino and the positive IOD were global in nature and the timescale occurred in a matter of several months occurred at the same time.

"In that time, some parts of Indonesia are still raining due to the brief dynamics of regional atmospheres, so El Nino's influence has not been felt significantly," he said.
