JAKARTA To reduce the use of plastic, the Batam City Government of Riau Islands asked the sacrificial animal officers, when distributing meat, they should not use plastic, but use banana leaves.

Batam Mayor Muhammad Rudi in Batam, said this was aimed at minimizing the use of plastic as a container, especially foodstuffs in Batam City, to make it more environmentally friendly.

"The distribution of sacrificial meat has the potential to increase plastic waste piles. This is certainly a special concern because it is as understood that disposable plastic waste is difficult to manage," said Rudi, quoted from Antara, Thursday, June 29.

In addition, he mentioned the effort to minimize piles of plastic waste after the implementation of the sacrificial pilgrimage.

"The indecomposable nature of plastic waste and the processing process cause toxic and carcinogenic properties that cause environmental pollution," he said.

This is stated in Circular Number 20 of 2023 concerning the Implementation of Eid al-Adha 1444 Hijriah Without Plastic Waste in Batam City Environment.

That way, Rudi requested that all elements of society have the spirit to keep the condition minimal in waste and anticipate a surge in plastic waste piles, and keep the environment clean and healthy.

"This circular anticipates an increase in the volume of waste accumulation in the celebration of Eid al-Adha 1444 Hijri. This is also to strengthen public participation in the importance of reducing plastic waste," said Rudi.

There are several points from the contents of the Batam Mayor's circular, including:

Performing Eid al-Adha 1444 H prayers is minimal in waste by carrying a reusable prayer mat (avoiding the use of used newspapers) and not bringing food and drinks that have the potential to increase the accumulation of plastic waste.

Urge and invite the committee to carry out Eid al-Adha and slaughter sacrificial meat in 1444 H not to use plastic bags as a forum for the distribution of sacrificial meat. And carry out sacrificial activities by taking into account aspects of the environment, such as blood management, jeroan and other remnants of sacrificial animals.

Replacing plastic bags as sacrificial meat containers using leaves (such as banana leaves), woven containers or other containers that can be reused or recoupled so as not to cause plastic waste.

Then provide a precipitated waste disposal site (3R) at the location of the Eid al-Adha prayer 1444 H and the distribution of sacrificial meat.

The committee for the implementation of Eid al-Adha and the slaughter of sacrificial animals 1444 H is fully responsible for the waste caused by the activities carried out.
