NATO Condemns Withdrawal Of Russia From Armed Forces Treaty In Europe

JAKARTA - The North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO) on Friday, June 9 condemned Russia's withdrawal from the European Armed Forces Agreement (CFE) and urged Moscow to reconsider the decision.

In a statement, NATO expressed criticism of Russia's decision to withdraw from a long history CFE agreement. The statement explained that Russia's actions systematically undermine European-Atlantic security and ignore gun control.

"NATO allies have condemned Russia's decision to withdraw from the historic CFE agreement," the military alliance said in a statement.

NATO emphasizes the importance of CFE as the basis for European security and asks Russia to reconsider its decision before the withdrawal notice period ends. The alliance also reminded Russia to carry out its commitments and obligations.

The NATO Alliance reiterated its commitment to effective conventional arms control as a key element of Euro-Atlantic security.

Russia's final withdrawal from the CFE agreement is scheduled for November 7, in accordance with the announcement of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Although Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree for the withdrawal in May, the country has suspended its implementation since 2007.

The CFE agreement signed in 1990 is an important step towards ending the Cold War era, as it requires representatives from NATO and the Warsaw Pact to reduce military equipment.

In February, Russia also announced its suspension of participation from another important arms control treaty, namely the New START nuclear agreement.

NATO continues to monitor these developments and hopes that Russia can reconsider its decision and continue to carry out their commitments for the safety of the Euro-Atlantics.
