Crowded With Cycling, The Ministry Of Transportation Adds A Special Bicycle Route

JAKARTA - Besides encouraging the provision of facilities for cyclists. The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) plans to provide technical assistance to district and city governments to build bicycle lanes.

"We have made plans for technical assistance for regencies / cities to build cycling facilities such as bicycle lanes, although only in the form of markers, hairs and so on," said Director of Road Transportation Facilities of the Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, Pandu Yunianto, in a press statement, Tuesday, 17. November.

He said that the technical assistance was intended for district / city governments which were considered to be experiencing budget constraints. "The Ministry of Transportation has been working on the budget, this does take time and this also depends on the state's financial capacity," he said.

On the same occasion, Chairman of the Bike To Work Indonesia Community Poetoet Sudarjanto assessed that bicycle lane infrastructure is an important component in ensuring the safety of cyclists. There are not enough special routes, but also integrated bicycle and other transportation users.

"Protected cycling paths must be a top priority. Even though cyclists are very disciplined, if the lanes are still mixed, there will still be risks," he said.

Previously, the Ministry of Transportation had also encouraged local governments (pemda) to provide facilities for cyclists. Including road socialization in the application of the Minister of Transportation Regulation (Permenhub) Number PM 59 of 2020 concerning Safety of Cyclists on the Road.
