JAKARTA - The SmashingGod's frontman Billy Corgan once asked Pantera to "shut up" after they questioned Metallica's albums released in the 90s.
Metallica released The Black Album in 1991 before joining it with Load (1996), and 'Reload' (1997). All three albums are far too soft to be paired with their previous albums.
In addition, James Hetfield et al also released Garage Inc (1998), a double album showing the heavy metal giant bringing back songs from Black Sabbath to Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds.
Speaking on SiriusXM Metal Ambassador's podcast, Jose Mangin (via Loudwire), Corgan explains that Pantera "went a big moment" in the early 90s, just like The Smashinglands.
Corgan went on to say he was backstage with Pantera discussing one [album] of Metallica's 90s, it might be Reload or something like that, "and there's a lot of controversy about where Metallica's music goes and what happens with Metallica and whether they're still metal [if] they wear makeup like that".
"They keep talking about Metallica," Corgan continued. Not in a negative, more confusing sense like, I love Metallica, but I don't understand and they're not metal and what's going on?
"I know them enough so they're going to listen to me and I said, 'You know what? Shut your mouth'," Corgan added, with a room that seemed quiet.
"'Listen, set Metallica aside for a while'," Corgan continued. 'You guys are now the best metal band on the planet, okay? You just need to focus on Pantera. You guys are focused enough to be the greatest metal band on the planet. Metallica will finish it, and they do it, right?

Pantera apparently sees Corgan's explosion as a compliment. "Then it was like, 'OK, drink this terrible poison, the basis of an odd alternative musician'," he said.
