BMKG Records 4 Aftershocks After M 7.1 In Lombok
NTB - BMKG recorded four aftershocks after the first magnitude M 7.1 hit the northern region of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on Tuesday, August 29 in the morning.
"The aftershocks until August 29, 2023 at 09.00 WITA occurred in 4 aftershocks. The largest magnitudes were M6.5 and the smallest were M3.2," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono in his statement, Tuesday, August 29, quoted by Antara.
Daryono also updated information that initially an earthquake in the Tanah Bumbu area, South Kalimantan M 7.4, became an earthquake in the North Java Sea of Lombok M 7.1.
He said the initial information was quick information that should be disseminated to the public as a warning. Rapid information is not final information, but must be spread quickly by the BMKG.
"The fast information is not final, but it must be distributed by BMKG. It must be, because SOP (operational standards and procedures), because BMKG is a tsunami early warning agency, not just an earthquake information agency," he said.
In addition, information is quickly distributed in conditions that take place for public safety. So that later, there will be changes in information regarding magnitudes and depths that are still happening.
Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at 02.55.32 WIB, the Java Sea region (North Lombok) was rocked by a tectonic earthquake. The results of the BMKG analysis show that this earthquake has updated parameters with a magnitude of 7.1.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 6.94 degrees South Latitude; 116.57 degrees east longitude, or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 163 km northeast of North Lombok, NTB at a depth of 525 km.

Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of deep earthquake (Deep Focus) due to the slab pull activity (Australian Plate extension down) of the influence of the gravitational force.
The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a mechanism for the movement of a combination of low-end horizontal movement (normal oblique).
