Bawaslu Increases Supervision To Prevent Money Politics During Campaign Period

JAKARTA - The Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) is committed to increasing supervision in the implementation of the 2024 General Election to prevent money politics.

Bawaslu chairman Rahmat Bagja said that one example of increasing supervision from his party was involving many supervisors to oversee the implementation of the campaign period.

"Earlier, surveillance involving many people was carried out in a calm period. In the 2024 election, we have withdrawn surveillance (intens) since the campaign period," said Bagja as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, June 16.

Hal yang dia sampaikan itu terkait pula dengan peringatan dari Mahkamah Konstitusi (MK) soal maraknya politik uang dalam pemilu dengan sistem apa pun.

The warning was conveyed in the trial of reading the decision on case number 114/PUU-XX/2022 related to the judicial review of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections which decided that the open proportional electoral system would still apply to the 2024 General Election in Jakarta, Thursday (15/6).

Bagja conveyed that with the 2024 election campaign period for 75 shorter days than the 2019 election period which lasted for 6 months 3 weeks, candidates for legislative members (caleg) did not have enough time to promote themselves and program plans to the public.

Thus, they have the potential to take instant ways to gain votes to win the 2024 election by doing money politics to buy voters.

"The 75 days are at the end (close to voting day). Participants will compete to convince voters. Convincing voters can do it with money. This is a bit dangerous," said Bagja.
