JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) together with Chevron build cooperation in the field of decarbonization, namely for the development of Carbon Capture Storage or Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS).

This collaboration was realized by conducting Joint Study Agreement between the two companies to assess the feasibility of CCS/CCUS in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Through this collaboration, Pertamina and Chevron agreed to share information on areas and the potential for CCS/CCUS development which contains information that includes geological data, geophysics, maps, models and interpretations, notes, summarys and commercial information.

This agreement was realized through the signing of three Confidentiality Agreement Carbon Capture Storage/Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS) between a subsidiary of the upstream sector of Pertamina, namely PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam, PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga-Sanga, and PT Pertamina Hulu East Kalimantan with Chevron Energy International Pte. Ltd.

This agreement is a follow-up to the Joint Study Agreement (JSA) between PT Pertamina (Persero) and Chevron Energy International Pte. Ltd which has been going on since March 6, 2023.

In fact, the exploration and collaboration of the two parties has started since 2022.

Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati said Pertamina is fully committed to developing low-carbon businesses through the CCS/CCUS project.

This move is one of the keys to accelerating dekabonization.

The application of CCS/CCUS technology is Pertamina's effort to adapt to the energy transition.

According to Nicke, currently efforts to utilize carbon are also relevant to the use of oil and gas (oil and gas) which is still needed up to zero carbon emissions or net zero emissions (NZE) 2060.

"The use of fossil energy in Indonesia is still dominant, meaning that we still produce large emissions. Therefore, it is important to be serious about CCS/CCUS technology," Nicke said in a statement to the media, Tuesday, November 14.

Currently, Pertamina has collaborated with Chevron in the development of the CCS Hub project in East Kalimantan which integrates emission-producing areas in the Balikpapan and Bontang Industrial Clusters.
