JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) continues to accelerate the construction of the Manikin Dam in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Currently, the dam work progress has reached 44.3 percent.

"From this physical progress, the Manikin Dam is targeted to be impounded and inaugurated in November 2024," said Director of Dams and Lakes at the Directorate General of Water Resources, Adenan Rasyid, quoted on the official website of the PUPR Ministry, Tuesday, October 10.

Currently, construction work has included intake channels that penetrate 350 hectares (ha) and circumvention channels of a total of more than 800 meters (m) that have been dug and penetrate 300 meters.

Construction of the Manikin Dam has been carried out from 2019-2024 with a budget of IDR 1.02 trillion through 2 work packages.

Package I was carried out by the implementing contractor PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk. (WIKA), PT Adhi Karya (Persero) Tbk. (ADHI), and PT Jaya Construction through joint operations (KSO).

Meanwhile, Package II was implemented by contractor PT PP (Persero) Tbk. (PTPP), PT Ashfri Putralora, and PT Minarta Dutahutama (KSO).

Adenan said that the construction of the Manikin Dam was entirely carried out on a former forest area which was still hampered by its release, but construction work could continue because the local community was cooperative.

"So that it doesn't drag on, of course the land problem must be resolved immediately and it is necessary to sit down together with all stakeholders," he said.

The Manikin Dam itself has a capacity of up to 28.20 million cubic meters and is planned to increase the Manikin irrigation area by 560 ha.

In the future, the Manikin Dam can also act as a raw water source of 700 liters per second for Kupang City and Kupang Regency, a Microhydro Power Plant (PLTMH) of 0.13 MW, and is able to reduce flooding by up to 331 cubic meters per second or 62 percent of Q50th.
