JAKARTA - PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SMGR) and PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) (PLN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as an effort to increase the use of electricity based on new and renewable energy (EBT) in the GIS operation area.

Through this MoU, PLN facilitates SIG to present a green industry through EBT sources in its operations to meet electricity needs in the GIS factory with a sustainability concept.

GIS President Director Donny Arsal hopes that this collaboration will increase the portion of the use of EBT.

"(As well as) supporting the achievement of the GIS target in reducing the intensity of carbon dioxide (CO2) Scope 2 emissions by 24 percent by 2030 from the 2019 baseline," he said, quoting Antara, Tuesday, September 19.

Donny explained that GIS is a large-scale electric user, with an electricity use rate of around 2.9 terrawat hour (TWh) per year or IDR 2.9 trillion per year for the cement production process.

Currently, GIS has land in the form of building, land, and pond roofs, which have the potential to be used for the implementation of solar panels of up to 572 MegaWatt peaks (MWp), of which 541 MWp are potential above the ground surface (ground mounted) and above the water level (floating) in nine locations.

The nine locations are GHOpo Tuban GIG, PT Semen Gresik Rembang Factory, PT Semen Padang, PT Semen Tonasa, PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI) Tuban Factory, SBI Narogong Factory, SBI Cilacap Factory, SBI Loknga Factory, and PT Semen Baturaja Tbk.

In the initial stage, the implementation plan of 5.4 MWp - 32 MWp per location, the rest, a solar panel project will be built in stages until 2030.

On the same occasion, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized PLN's commitment to synergize with SIG in reducing carbon emissions and developing large-scale EBT.

"This is just the first step. Hopefully after the MoU signature we can start soon, within one or two months," said Darmawan.

In the process of transitioning energy, according to him, a balance is needed between economic growth and environmental sustainability, so it is necessary to collaborate with various local and international stakeholders.

"Because this is a big project, it needs collaboration from policies, technology, innovation to investment," said Darmawan.
