The Trade Sector Absorbs the Most Jobs in East Kalimantan

SAMARINDA - The trade sector, including wholesale, retail, repair and maintenance of cars and motorcycles in East Kalimantan Province (Kaltim) absorbed the most workers, up to 20.33 percent, based on data from BPS Kaltim in February 2023.

"In February 2023, business fields in this sector made the highest contribution to employment in East Kalimantan, namely 367,785 people or 20.33 percent," said Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for East Kalimantan, Yusniar Juliana, quoted from Antara, Thursday, May 18.

The employment absorption of 367.785 people experienced an additional 1.515 people, when compared to February 2022 where there were 366.270 workers in the wholesale, retail, repair and maintenance of cars and motorbikes.

The second largest contributor to labor absorption was the agricultural business field in a broad sense such as food crops, horticulture, forestry and fisheries, which reached 19.99 percent or as many as 361,583 workers.

This employment of 361.583 people experienced an additional 1.710 workers, when compared to the same month in 2022 where there were 359.873 workers in the agricultural sector in a broad sense.

In third place is the processing industry business field with a share of 7.81 percent or a total of 141.317 workers, a reduction of 14.185 people compared to February 2022 which totaled 155.422 workers.

He said the level of education could indicate the quality and productivity of the workforce, which can be seen in the February 2023 data, with the working population being dominated by those with high school education, namely 27.55 percent.

"This figure exceeds the percentage of working population with elementary school education level and below which still dominates in February 2021 and February 2022, while the workforce with higher education, namely diplomas and universities is 14.99 percent," said Yusniar.
