JAKARTA - TikTok currently has 325 million monthly active users in Southeast Asia, as well as 125 million users of Indonesia itself.
However, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew admitted that his son, now under the age of 13, did not use his social media.
"My son is under 13 years old. In the United States (US), we have a policy that children under 13 should not use TikTok and we are very proud of the product," said law at the TikTok Southeast Asia Impact Forum Report 2023 event, in Jakarta, Thursday, June 15.
"So when my kids were in the US, he didn't use it, I'm very happy they used that experience. But, outside the US, right now we don't have experience under 13 years old," he added.
Chew also said that in this policy the platform embraces third-party child safety experts to review every content on TikTok.
"It's very secure. It's very important that, you know, we identify users under 13 who use TikTok, (and if there are users) we remove them from the platform," explained Chew.
In addition, Chew is happy that its platform continues to grow globally, especially in Southeast Asia.
"Our job is to build missions, inspire creativity and bring joy and hopefully expand the great communities we have built in this region," said Chew.
