Wamenkumham: Bill On Asset Confiscation Submitted To DPR On May 16, 2023

Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Edward Omar Syarif Hiariej revealed that the draft Law on Asset Confiscation would be submitted to the Indonesian House of Representatives on May 16, 2023. "It is planned that when it enters the trial period on May 16, it will be submitted to the DPR," said Eddy, the nickname of the Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Office, Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Tuesday, May 2. The Indonesian House of Representatives is still undergoing a recess period starting April 15, 2023 and on May 16, 2023, it is scheduled to have undergone a trial period after the recess is over. According to Eddy, the Asset Confiscation Bill is still open to discussion with the government and the DPR. This discussion will involve several state institutions, such as the National Police, the Attorney General's Office, and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. "Not yet (separated), this is all a subject to discuss. So there are seven to nine ministries and institutions involved involved and it is also a presidential letter (supres) to the seven ministers and institutions to be discussed together with the DPR," he said. Eddy admitted that he did not yet have an idea of the mechanism for confiscation of assets in the future because the government and the DPR are still looking for a middle ground on the Asset Confiscation Bill. "Once again, everything is still a subject to discuss. So, we can't determine yet, both parties are forming the law. The government wants A, the DPR wants there to be a discussion so that there is a common ground," said Eddy. Previously at the end of April, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD stated that the draft Law on the Confiscation of Criminal Assets was already at the desk of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo and was just waiting to be signed. Mahfud estimates that President Jokowi will sign the Bill on the Confiscation of Criminal Assets no later than next week. "Yes, it's just a matter of time for the president to see (at) the table of the letters that must be signed because there are so many events. But, I think it will be at the latest next week," said Mahfud at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Office, Jakarta, Thursday (27/4).

President Jokowi previously stated that he was surprised why the draft Asset Confiscation Bill was never completed, even though he emphasized that he would immediately issue a presidential decree related to the discussion.
