The West Sumatra Police arrested two female students at a university in Bukittinggi City who were suspected of being involved in promoting online gambling through the Instagram application and the WhatsApp group application owned by the perpetrators.
The Head of Public Relations of the West Sumatra Police, Kombes Dwi Sulistyawan, said the two female students were twins with the initials IT (24) and MG (24).
"The two perpetrators were arrested after the Sub-Directorate V team of the West Sumatra Police Ditreskrimsus conducted a patrol and found the actions taken by the two girls. The two girls played a role in distributing and transmitting documents that had gambling acts on their personal Instagram accounts," he said during a press conference in Padang, Antara, Tuesday, March 28.
The IT and MG perpetrators were arrested last Monday at a boarding house located on Jalan Bypass Number 1 Manggis Bukittinggi City, West Sumatra.
According to him, they endorse online gambling through social media to the public and get a share of each click from people who play on the site that is distributed.
"Both of them only act as part of the promotion, but they admit that they know that their actions are a criminal act. They are still amateurs, if they are professionals, it is certainly difficult to catch," he said.
Officers confiscated a mobile phone, simcard for the WhatsApp application and the g-mail account used to carry out the practice. For the Instagram account used for the promotion of gambling links, namely @megashntaa and @yashnt.
From the testimony of the perpetrators they have only carried out their actions for three months. In the first month they earned an income of IDR 750 thousand, the second month IDR 1 million and in the third month IDR 1,250,000.
Both were charged with Article 45 paragraph 2 Jo article 27 paragraph 2 of Law number 19 of 2016 concerning amendments to Law number 11 of 2008 concerning electronic information and transactions and or Article 303 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code with a maximum imprisonment of six years
Meanwhile, PS Kasubdit V Ditreskrimsus Polda West Sumatra Kompol Purwanto said that his party is currently continuing to develop the network above the two perpetrators.
"We have pocketed it and will carry out the investigation process and we hope the media will be patient," he said.
He said this gambling site is a domestic site and both of them received orders to promote through the existing WhatsApp group.
"If there is an order, they will install promotions on their Instagram accounts that do have a lot of followers," he said.
