JAKARTA - PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) has prepared three steps to develop ammonia as a step to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Deputy President Director of Pupuk Indonesia Nugroho Christijanto said the first step was collaboration and cooperation with several technology-owning customers, where Pupuk Indonesia had started running through collaboration with TOYO Engineering Corporation to Mitsui & Co Ltd.

"We have cooperation with TOYO and other companies such as Mitsui because they already have technology, while Pupuk Indonesia has the necessary infrastructure," Nugroho said as quoted by Antara, Monday, April 3.

The second step is to collaborate with industry players to overcome common needs.

This collaboration can be done by exchanging the products needed by each other.

"For example, what can be exchanged for our products. So at the same time we can comply with the decarbonization target," said Nugroho.

The last step is the importance of wider collaboration between ecosystems. For example, through collaboration with several companies across sectors such as marine to energy.

"The three collaborations between ecosystems are wider. I believe we cannot avoid that ammonia will become a source of energy for the future and will be consumed not only what we know now, but in the maritime industry and so on," said Nugroho.

Through these three steps, it is hoped that the use of ammonia can be more massive in various fields, so that it can help the government in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In the end, the Net Zero Emission target in 2060 can be achieved.

"So we are trying to reduce decarbonization of what we already have from our ammonia plant, from our power plant and also other facilities that emit greenhouse emissions," said Nugroho.

Executive Officer/Division Director of Solution Business Toyo Engineering Corp Eiji Sakata said Toyo was ready to help Pupuk Indonesia and the government reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, Toyo collaborated with Pupuk Indonesia to build a factory in Indonesia to produce ammonia.

"There is great interest and opportunity to enter the ammonia field. For TOYO, our activities on green and blue ammonia products," he also said.

IHI Corporation Managing Executive Officer Nobuhiko Kubota said his party was committed to participating in solving the problem of greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, IHI has prepared a chain of ammonia supply from upstream to downstream.

Although there are several challenges related to technology, IHI will consistently produce green ammonia.

While downstream, IHI is also thinking about its use.

In the downstream use of ammonia and incorporating ammonia into a gas turbine with 2 mw.

"For the maritime, we are trying to create a maritime industry, and recently in Japan it uses ammonia as a steel supply industry and so on," said Nobuhiko.

Meanwhile, Business Development Director Southeast Asia & Australia KBR Inc Roy Daroyni said ammonia could be used as a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Given, ammonia can be used into a lot of energy sources including transportation.

"So why use ammonia as fuel, because ammonia can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and we can continue to use existing assets. So we are trying to focus on achieving that through clean ammonia," said Roy.
