JAKARTA - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif said that the government is taking a new approach in preventing unlicensed Mining (PETI) and the need for synergy with the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) or local government.

The steps taken are asking local governments to provide recommendations for the People's Mining Area (WPR) and provide convenience in issuing People's Mining Permits (IPR).

"What we hope is that the completeness of the WPR must be followed by a very small IPR and ask Forkompinda elements to be able to help immediately the regions to carry out their IPR issuance recommendations," said Arifin, quoted on Saturday, March 25.

Arifin said that PETI occurs chronicly and never ends in the regions. To solve this problem, it requires the commitment of the government, law enforcement, and collaboration of many parties.

Arifin said that currently 2,741 locations and 1,092 locations have been identified by PETI and 1,092 locations have been determined. "There are still around 1600 locations that need to be completed," he continued.

In addition, continued Arifin, the government is also expanding the scope of the people's mining area. In Law Number 3/2020, people's mining activities can be carried out in a maximum area of 100 hectares (Ha) and a maximum of 100 ha. Meanwhile, when Law No. 4/2009 is still valid, the people can only mine in an area as wide as 25 ha as deep as possible.

He further added that the Government's special attention to illegal mining practices was none other than due to the many negative impacts of the operation of PETIs, including those related to social, economic and environmental life.

"The social impact of PETI activities, among others, hinders regional development because it is not in accordance with RTRW, can trigger social conflicts in the community, cause vulnerable conditions and security disturbances in the community, cause damage to public facilities, have the potential to cause public diseases, and health problems due to exposure to chemicals," concluded Arifin.
