Police Together With IKN Authority Form Illegal Mining Task Force

BALIKPAPAN - Police together with the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) have formed an Illegal Mining Handling Task Force to resolve cases of illegal mining around the IKN area in North Penajam Paser.

"The Coordinator is the IKN Authority. We will clean up illegal mines such as in Bukit Kulitak, Penajam," said East Kalimantan Police Chief Inspector General Imam Sugianto as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, July 1.

Controlling illegal mines is a priority because the longer it will be detrimental. Because it is illegal, miners do not pay taxes that should be used as state income which is then used for mutual welfare.

Because it is also illegal that miners only think about dredging their produce as much as possible without taking into account natural conditions and the impact of their activities.

Moreover, IKN is built with the concept of a 'catastrophic city' or a city surrounded by forests and synergies with nature.

Therefore, until May 2023, the East Kalimantan Police have brought order to 36 illegal mines throughout East Kalimantan. Most recently in mid-May the police arrested illegal miners and closed their areas in Berau.

The suspects were charged with Article 158 of Law Number 4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining.

"Once again, we will clean it up," said the Imam Police Chief.
