Getting A 7 Minute Standing Ovation, Johnny Depp Crying At The Cannes Film Festival

JAKARTA - Johnny Depp appeared full of emotion at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. He was present at the premiere of his latest film, Jeanne Du Barry, who became the opening film of the festival on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.

Launching People, Jeanne Du Barry's premiere received a standing opportunity for seven minutes. Video circulating on social media shows Johnny Depp crying watching the audience applaud.

Depp looked at the audience and began to wipe his tears. He was also seen hugging his co-star and director Maiwenn.

"I want to share this moment with my love, my producer, with Le Pacte. It's a difficult production... and I want to share this moment with all my team at the theater," Maiwenn said at the event.

Premiere was carried out for almost a year since Johnny Depp was involved in a defamation case trial with his ex-wife, Amber Heard because the article Heard wrote in 2018 contained allegations of domestic violence.

Johnny Depp's presence on the red carpet of Cannes is not entirely positive. When this news circulated, not a few of the public, including Heard's supporters, voiced a protest against the Cannes Film Festival. They consider this festival to perpetuate the practice of violence and glorify the perpetrators.

Thierry Fremaux as the head of the festival responded to allegations related to Johnny Depp's busy rejection on social media.

"I don't know Johnny Depp's image in the United States. To be honest, during my life, I only had one rule, freedom of speech and acting legally," Fremaux said.

"If Johnny Depp is prohibited from acting or the film is prohibited, we can't be here talking about it. So we watched the film Maiwenn and we felt this could be COMPeted. She might be the eighth female director here," she said again.

This controversy arose after the film was announced at Cannes because everyone knew Johnny was making a film in France. "I don't know why he (Maiwenn) chose it but this is a question you have to ask Maiwenn," Fremaux continued.

Directed by Ma Waywenn, Jeanne du Barry tells the story of French King Louis XV played by Depp and his partner Jeanne du Barry (Ma bigwenn) who lives in Versailles Palace. Louis XV took him to the palace even though Jeanne was not a respected person.

Jeanne is a working-class woman who uses her intelligence and captivities to raise social status. Jeanne's presence created a court scandal in the kingdom. Then, Louis XV was accused of corruption after 59 years of government, the longest in French history.

So far the film Jeanne Du Barry does not yet have a theatrical release date.
