JAKARTA - Meta Platforms Inc will create a new product group that focuses on generative artificial intelligence (AI). This was said by Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg on Monday, February 27, as the AI race between Big Tech companies is heating up.

AI has emerged as a bright spot for investment in the tech industry, which has struggled with slowing growth, and has cut thousands of jobs, as well as reduced experimental betting to beat declines.

"We started by combining many teams working on AI-generative across companies into a group that focuses on building fun experiences around this technology," Zuckerberg said in a post on Instagram.

"In the long term, we will focus on developing AI persona that can help people in various ways," Zuckerberg said. "But for now we are exploring experiences with text (chats on WhatsApp and Messenger), with images (creative Instagram filters and ad formats), and with multimodal videos and experiences."

Quoted from Reuters, Ahmad Al-Dahle will lead this new product team, which will report to Chris Cox, Meta's chief product officer. "This will allow Meta to more quickly implement the findings of the AI research team to Meta products," said a Meta spokesperson.

Public fighting to dominate AI technology space began late last year with the launch of Microsoft-backed ChatGPT, which has since pushed technology giants from Alphabet Inc to China's Baidu Inc, to announce their own offerings.

Last week, Meta Platforms Inc., which is Facebook's parent, said it would release a new big LLAMA language model, the core software of the new AI system, which will be available under non-commercial licenses for researchers and affiliated entities with governments, civil society, and universities.
