Elon Musk Proposes Charges For Commercial And Government Twitter

JAKARTA – In a tweet on Tuesday or Wednesday, April 4, Indonesian time, Elon Musk said that Twitter Inc may charge a small fee for commercial and government users.

The plan is part of the global conglomerate's efforts to grow the social media revenue it has lagged behind its bigger rivals, Facebook Meta Platforms Inc.

"Twitter will always be free for casual users, but may cost a bit for commercial/government users," Musk said in a tweet. "Some income is better than nothing!" he added in another tweet.

Twitter itself declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. Last week, Reuters reported that Musk told the bank he would develop new ways to monetize tweets and reduce executive director salaries to cut costs at the company's social media platform.

Responding to the tweet, several netizens responded positively. However, there were also those who responded negatively, even being hot and not wanting to use this platform anymore.

Musk also told the bank that he plans to develop features to grow the business' revenue. Including new ways to make money from tweets that contain important information or go viral.

At the annual Met Gala in New York on Monday, May 2 Musk said Twitter's current reach was just a "niche," and he wanted a much larger percentage of the country to be in it. Musk has also suggested a series of changes to Twitter since last month.

In a tweet that was later deleted, Musk suggested changes to the premium subscription service Twitter Blue, including cutting its price, banning ads, and providing the option to pay in the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.

After signing a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion last week, Musk said he wanted to improve the platform with new features, build open source algorithms to increase trust, beat spam bots, and authenticate all humans.
