Simone Inzaghi's Innovation Makes The Impossible Possible For Inter

JAKARTA - Nothing is impossible if Simone Inzaghi has said in the world of football, especially for Inter Milan.

Marco Parolo just joked when he asked Simone Inzaghi a question last December. "Back when you coached me at Lazio, you offered us dinner for the first goal to be assisted by a full-back and scored by other full-backs," the former Italy international said in an interview after Inter's home win over Udinese.

On Saturday, Parolo's vision came true. In the 37th minute of Inter's match at Bologna, Alessandro Bastoni, who initially played as a starter on the left side of the Inter defender's three-back formation, pushed up to support his full-back outside the opponent's penalty box.

Carlos Augusto returned the ball to him, Bastoni sent first-time cross, and Yann Bisseck, Inter's 'terzo' right-hand side for the game, arriving to score a header to the back post.

The most impossible part is that all of this doesn't feel impossible at all. Bastoni has taken this position and played the cross throughout the season. Bisseck, who joined from Aarhus in Denmark last summer, defines himself as a modern bek, who likes to play with the ball and score goals'. He has opened his goal account for the club with his goal against Lecce in December a game where his volley also hit the crossbar.

There may not be a better club in Europe right now for players with such a mindset to thrive. It even defines Inzaghi football as a "modern" that doesn't feel generous because it will imply a broader trend from clubs that adhere to a liquid approach to existing formations. Where else can a young centre-back feel so empowered to carry out attacks knowing his colleagues will fill the space he left?
