JAKARTA - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Garut Regency, West Java, said that the public must be aware of the potential for high wave hazards that can cause tidal sea water to hit the southern coast of Garut.

"People around the beach are encouraged to increase their vigilance," said Head of Garut Regency BPBD Executive

Based on a report from the Meteorology, Climatology, Geophysics Agency (BMKG), he said, there was an early warning of high waves on March 12 and 13, 2024 at 07.00 WIB with an altitude of 2.5 to 4.0 meters in the southern waters of Garut, the Indian Ocean, with wind speed blowing from the northwest 24 to 28 km/hour.

The forecast for extreme weather and high waves, he said, occurred along the southern coast of Garut at around 10:00 WIB causing high tides to overflow to the shoreline.

"Sea waves are somewhat increasing, tidal waves or water are abundant to the beach or to the shoreline," he said.

He conveyed that as a result of the high wave incident, a number of public facilities and fishing boats around the beach were damaged by the waves.

The danger of the wave, he said, is prohibited for fishermen to go to sea. Likewise, people do not approach the beach until the sea conditions are monitored to be stable or safe.

He conveyed that the Garut BPBD had also instructed all disaster volunteers in the southern region, then sub-district and village officials to continue to monitor the impact of the high waves.

"Our agency on the coast to jointly increase vigilance because it is possible and endangers the surrounding community," saidaturahAnwar.

He added that currently the ranks of the sub-district communication forum, including from the ranks of the TNI and Polri, then volunteers, are still monitoring coastal areas where the weather conditions are still extreme with strong winds and rain.

Temporary reports that came in regarding the impact of the sea waves, he said, were the Rancabuaya Port area, Caringin District, which caused damage to fishing boats and gazebos on the beach, while there were no casualties.

"The impact of the fishing boat was partially damaged, being in the unit's calculation stage. Gazebo was damaged by strong winds and sea water rising is still being calculated. There were no casualties," he said.
