JAKARTA - More than 20 thousand members of the Railway, Maritime and Transportation Union (RMT) in 14 rail companies went on strike on Thursday (20/7) as part of a long-term dispute over working conditions, salary and work security.

The strike came as the rail boss announced more than 2,000 layoffs (PHK) and the closure of a thousand ticket offices across the UK's rail network.

The National Railway has warned passengers, saying that most railroad lines will be services reduced or no service at all.

Although the service providers are based in the UK, some organizers run services to Wales and Scotland.

"I am proud of our members who show fortitude and determination in this prolonged dispute. Our members and unions will not be afraid of train bosses or government ministers and our dispute will continue until we can reach a settlement of negotiations," said RMT Secretary General Mick Lynch as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, July 20.

The union said further strike action was planned for July 22 and 29.

British commuters will still face service disruptions in the coming days.

Drivers, who are members of the Locomotive Engineers Association and Firefighters (ASLEF), did not work overtime at 15 train companies between July 17 and July 22.

The ASLEF action is not a full strike but could lead to some reductions in schedules and cancellations in the last minute.

The railroad strike began in June 2022 after RMT members took a "walkout" action due to disagreements regarding salary discussions and planning changes in work practices.

The dispute in Scotland and Wales was resolved by RMT in December 2022, and by ASLEF in May 2023, while disputes in Britain continue to this day.
