JAKARTA - Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned on Thursday Russia had attacked key infrastructure in Ukraine, as dozens of missiles launched into civilian centers on Thursday.

Ukrainian missile attacks and defensive fire were heard in the capital and an explosion occurred in the cities of Kharkiv, Odesa, Lviv, and Zhytomyr.

"Kyiv may be having problems with electricity supply and urging residents to charge their cell phones and water supplies," said Mayor Klitschko, quoted by The National News December 30.

Meanwhile, Mayor Kharkiv Ihor Terekhov said officials confirmed what was the target of the attack and whether there were casualties.

"Two private houses in the Darnytskyi district were damaged by falling missile fragments," the Kyiv City Government said on Telegram.

It said businesses and playgrounds were also damaged, with the condition of the victims being "confirmed".

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said at Telegram 90 percent of the city was without electricity and electric public transportation did not work.

"There may be disruption of water supply," he said.

The Ukrainian military said it shot down 54 missiles from 69 launched by Russia in an attack that began at 7 a.m. local time.

"This morning, the aggressor launched air and sea-based cruise missiles, anti-aircraft missiles and the S-300 ADMS at our country's energy infrastructure facility," wrote top Ukrainian general Valery Zaluzhny on Telegram, citing Reuters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently acknowledged that his country's troops had hit Ukraine's critical energy facility.

That comes after several international leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, said that targeting energy facilities could be a war crime.

The attack comes as the country's spy chief Kyrylo Budanov told the BBC that the conflict was on the verge of a dead end.

"The situation is deadlocked, immovable," he said.

"We cannot beat them in any direction as a whole. They also can't. We are looking forward to new supplies of weapons, and the arrival of more sophisticated weapons," he said.

The latest attack comes strongly after the Kremlin's rejection of Ukraine's peace plan, insisting that Kyiv should accept Russian annexation of the four Ukrainian territories.
