JAKARTA - The American pizza restaurant chain Domino's ordered more than 800 units of electric vehicles to serve consumer shipments in the country, with more than 100 units already usable by the end of this month.
A total of 855 Chevrolet Bolt units were specifically ordered, making Domino's largest battery-powered pizza delivery service in Uncle Sam's country. So far, about 112 EV units have been in Domino's outlets.
"Domino's has always been at the forefront of pizza delivery and electric delivery cars make sense, as vehicle technology continues to develop," said Russell Weiner, chief executive of Domino's.
"We have made a commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and this is one way we can start reducing the impact of our environment, one delivery at a time," he explained.
Chevrolet Bolt EV is known to have zero exhaust emissions, with batteries capable of traveling up to 416km.
Domino's said the lattice Bolt EV also includes advanced safety features, with lower maintenance costs that would reduce overhead costs.
The company also hopes that its electric fleet will attract more job seekers who do not own cars.
In a joint statement with Domino's, General Motors vice president Fleet Ed Peper said the two companies were committed to "improving our environment".
He added that GM plans to eliminate exhaust emissions from light-duty vehicles in the US by 2035.
Previously, Domino's in 2019 launched a program in which delivery drivers used special electric bicycles for delivery, to reduce emissions and save fuel costs.
The company says the program increases its recruitment pool and improves delivery services as a whole.
