JAKATA - Dubai police are taking strong action again to bring discipline to car owners in the city, warning drivers that hundreds of cars will be towed for metro parking violations.

Seventeen cars found illegally parked under the Dubai Metro bridge have been towed away so far this year, while 400 drivers have been warned.

They were contacted by inspectors from the Road and Transport Authority (RTA), then asked to move their vehicle.

The 400 owners were given one hour to comply before their car was towed for violating parking rules. Meanwhile, 17 of them failed to do so and their vehicle was towed

"More than 400 motorists have been contacted and 17 vehicles whose owners failed to move them within an hour of their notice being withdrawn," said Osama Al Safi of the RTA.

The Dubai Police are urging car owners to follow the established parking rules, breaking the habit of parking their vehicles wherever they want, as it makes the city look untidy.

RTA inspectors regularly conduct inspections of all parking lots in Dubai, calling violators to alert them before any action is taken. The check also includes a check to see if the vehicle has been left in the metro parking lot for too long.

"The RTA launched a field campaign along the 90-kilometer Dubai railway line, to prevent indiscriminate parking of vehicles under metro bridges," said Al Safa.

"This bridge is not only a concrete structure to support the elevated metro line, it is also part of the emirate's architectural structure and features a state-of-the-art public transport network."

Signs have been put up by the RTA to warn members of the public not to park in unspecified bays.
