JAKARTA - Turkey is developing a new generation of cruise missiles that are said to be highly destructive and precise, capable of being launched from various types of platforms.

Turkish defense contractor Roketsan announced it has developed a new generation cruise missile that can be launched from land, sea and air platforms.

Named Cakir, the new cruise missile will later become a power-up for the Turkish armed forces, with advanced features and an effective warhead, the company said in a statement.

The cruise missile is still in the design stage, and its first tests are scheduled for later this year, with platform integration set to take place in 2023, reports Daily Sabah March 31.

Meanwhile, the test fire of this missile will be carried out from the country's famous Akncı unmanned aerial vehicle (UCAV), the most advanced and cutting-edge drone built by Turkey.

With a range of more than 150 kilometers (93 miles), the cruise missile can be launched from anything from fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, to attack drones, to tactical ground vehicles to naval platforms.

Not only that, this new generation cruise missile will be equipped with the KTJ1750 turbo-jet engine developed by Kale Arge. By itself, it can target targets above ground, sea and in caves.

Featuring a warhead and a unique point of impact selection system, the missile will be highly destructive, the statement said, adding it can strike targets with high precision, regardless of weather conditions thanks to its advanced mid-phase and terminal guidance system.

It will also boast a network-based datalink facility and the human-in-the-loop capability to update, strike, re-attack, or cancel targets mid-flight.

And, also capable of carrying multiple payloads, the missile will be able to coordinate and communicate with other ordinances as a swarm.
