JAKARTA - The former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was allowed to leave the Kuala Lumpur National Heart Institute (IJN) on Saturday at 08.40 local time.

According to an IJN press statement, the husband of Dr Siti Hasmah had previously undergone treatment at IJN and was allowed to return to rest at home.

"He (Tun Dr Mahathir) has now been allowed to go home and rest at home and will undergo further treatment at IJN," he said.

Mahathir and Siti Hasmah also expressed their appreciation to all those who prayed for his health during Tun Dr Mahathir's treatment at IJN.

The 96-year-old statesman had previously been treated at the Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CCU), IJN.

IJN was first established in 1984 by several cardiologists and general practitioners and is housed in the old blood bank office of GHKL.

IJN moved to its current location in 1992 and specializes in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery services for adults and children.

As a national referral center for cardiovascular disease, IJN handles new cases referred from within and outside the country and follow-up cases in outpatient polyclinics.
