JAKARTA - Twitter has re-launched a new policy in increasing transparency around content restricted due to hate speech violations.
Elon Musk's social media will soon display a label that clearly tells users the visibility of content has been restricted because it contradicts Twitter's policies regarding hateful language.
The company has long restricted the visibility of tweets that violate its terms of service, commonly called Freedom of Speech, Not Reaching rules. However, they admit that they do not know for sure when this will be done.
"We were historically not transparent when we took this action. (Therefore) in the near future, we will add a publicly visible label to the identified Tweet that could potentially violate our policy to let you know that we have limited its visibility," Twitter said in a blog post quoted Tuesday, April 18.
Users will have the option when clicking the label to actually view tweet content. This label provides a new level of transparency on law enforcement actions by displaying which policies the Tweet potentially violates to Tweet creators and other users on Twitter.
Tweets with this label will make it harder to find on the platform. In addition, Twitter said it would not place ads next to labeled content.
Tweeters can also send input on the label if they think Twitter has misbounded their Tweet visibility. Even so, when Tweeters send the input it doesn't guarantee they will receive a response or a Tweet reach will be restored.
"We are trying to allow writers to appeal our decision," Twitter said.
Initially, this labeling only applies to a group of Tweets that have the potential to violate the Hate Behavior policy.
"We plan to expand its implementation to other policy areas that will take effect in the coming months," Twitter said.
"These changes are designed to generate more proportional and transparent law enforcement actions for everyone on our platform. We will continue to remove illegal content and suspend bad actors from our platform."
