Ten of the 20 correctional institutions (prisons) and state detention centers (rutan) in South Sumatra held remissions for prisoners or inmates of Buddhist correctional communities on Vesak Day 2023.

"Inmates who received a reduction in their criminal period or special remission for religious holidays today are 32 people who are mostly fostered related to narcotics crimes," said Head of the South Sumatra Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office Ilham Djaya in Palembang, Sunday, quoted from Antara.

He explained that the correctional inmates (WBP) who received the remission were proposed from 10 (prisons) and state detention centers (rutan).

The special remission for Vesak Day was given to Buddhist inmates from 15 days to one month and 15 days, with details of 15 days of remission given to six inmates, one month remission to 25 people, while one month and 15 days remission was given to one WBP.

The most work units (prisons and detention centers) that provide special remissions for Vesak Day this year are the Palembang Class I (Pakjo) Detention Center, which is 10 inmates.

Then the Palembang Women's Class IIA Prison and the Class IIB Banyuasin Narcotics Prison each gave remissions to six WBPs, and three Palembang Class I Prisons.

Class IIA Banyuasin prison provides remissions to two WBPs, Muara Beliti Narcotics Prison, Tanjung Raja Prison, Kayu Agung Prison, Prabumulih Detention Center, and Lubuk Linggau Prison each giving remissions to one WBP person.

"I appreciate the inmates who received remission, because they have shown positive behavior by following coaching with good results," said Kakanwil Ilham.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Correctional Division of the South Sumatra Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office, Bambang Haryanto, said that prisoners who are entitled to remission are good behavior as evidenced by not serving disciplinary punishment and having served a minimum sentence of six months.

Then the WBP has followed the coaching program organized by the prison and state detention center where the person concerned is serving a criminal period with good predicate.

"Through this remission, it is hoped that all WBPs will always improve themselves, realize their mistakes, obey and obey the law, become productive people during and after serving their criminal period," he said.

Regarding the number of prisons and detention centers in South Sumatra based on data until the end of May 2023, there were 15,608 people, with details of 13,397 prisoners and 2,211 prisoners.

"Looking at the data on the number of residents compared to the capacity of prisons and detention centers in South Sumatra, which only reached 6,605 people, there was an overabundance of up to 100 percent more which is now a serious concern for his party to overcome this problem," said Bambang.
