Exchanging Eid Al-Adha Congratulations, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz Talks To Build Trust With Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
JAKARTA - Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz claimed to have spoken with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday, July 19 yesterday. Both agreed on the need for trust-building steps.
It was the first high-level contact from Israel's newly installed government last month, which ousted the country's longest-serving leader, Benjamin Netanyahu.
The ruling coalition is made up of left, centre, right and Arab parties with little in common in the diplomatic sector.
Officials said they would focus on domestic reforms and avoid most significant moves on international issues such as policy towards Palestine.
Ganz, as quoted by Reuters via Antara, said he and Abbas exchanged greetings for Eid al-Adha on Tuesday, July 20, or on one of the most sacred celebrations in the Islamic calendar.
"The discussions were positive and both noted the need to advance trust-building steps between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), which will benefit the economy and security of the entire region," said a statement from Gantz's office.
Abbas's office confirmed the conversation without providing further information.
Israel's new president said last week he had spoken with Abbas, who congratulated him on his new role.
