Mazda Iconic SP Concept Car Confirmed Will Soon Enter The Production Line

JAKARTA - Mazda has officially announced the return of a rotary-engined sports car to the United States market. This was confirmed directly by Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro in an interview with Automotive News, as reported by Autoblogging, Saturday, December 14.

"We are constantly trying to make it happen, and we are stepping forward step by step," said Moro, referring to the concept of the Iconic SP which debuted at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.

The positive response received made the concept car get the green light to be produced. More interestingly, the head of Mazda's design stated that the Iconic SP was designed taking mass production into account, meaning this car could be more quickly available on the streets.

Along with the announcement, Moro also confirmed that Mazda is developing a new hybrid engine. Uniquely, this machine will use a two-rotor design.

"Both rotors rotated separately in different rooms with one axis. We need to generate more electricity. Two rotors will produce more power, which is more in line with the characteristics of the United States market," Moro explained.

This hybrid configuration is similar to the one in the Iconic SP concept, where the engine acts as a generator to power electric propulsion. This combination is claimed to generate up to 365 hp of power, which will be the highest for Mazda's rotary sports car.

Mazda's decision to use the hybrid system is considered a smart step. Compared to pure electric cars that require still developing charging infrastructure, hybrid cars are considered more in accordance with current conditions. The existence of gasoline engines as reserves is certainly an added value.
