Sony Develops 200MP Sensor And 100MP For Smartphones

JAKARTA Sony is reportedly developing a 200MP and 100MP resolution camera sensor for smartphones. This technology has the potential to change the trend of flagship mobile phone cameras in the world in the near future.

Samsung has already used the 200MP ISOCELL sensor on the Galaxy S Ultra flagship line, and the latest rumors say that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will adopt the same 200MP sensor from the S25 Ultra. Meanwhile, most smartphone manufacturers in China still survive with a 50MP main sensor due to various limitations to the 200MP ISOCELL sensor.

However, this trend seems to be changing. According to information from the Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Sony's 100MP sensor will be adopted by many Chinese OEMs for flagship devices powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 or Dimensity 9500. This indicates that flagship phones released later this year could start using the new sensor.

On the other hand, Sony is also predicted to use its 200MP sensor on one of their smartphones and sell it to other Chinese OEMs. A report from Sammobile states that Sony's 200MP sensor will have a larger size than the 200MP ISOCELL sensor currently used in the Vivo X200 Pro (as telephoto) and S25 Ultra (as the main camera).

With the huge attention the Vivo X200 Pro gets thanks to its 200MP periscope camera, it's not surprising that Chinese phone manufacturers are starting to switch to 100MP and 200MP resolution Sony sensors. In addition to an increased resolution, this sensor is also expected to bring improvements to the details and performance of image processing as a whole.

In recent years, the difference in camera sensor resolution between novice class phones and flagship Ultra is running low. Many flagship phones use 50MP sensors, so this is the right momentum to increase resolution.

Now, it's interesting to see how far Sony's 100MP sensor can improve the quality of photography on next-generation flagship phones.
