The latest smartphone from Google, Pixel 8 Pro, has a new feature in the form of an infrared temperature sensor. Although this feature is new, Google doesn't talk much about the benefits of this feature.

Google only explains that the Pixel 8 Pro is able to find out the temperature of an object through this temperature sensor. Pixel 8 Pro users can check the heat in the pan until the temperature of the bottle of formula milk before giving it to the baby.

Temperature measurements to an object are not a problem, but it is different when this phone can measure body temperature. This phone becomes like a class II medical device and of course requires permission from the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (FDA).

Google has applied for permission to the FDA according to The Verge records, but Google did not provide details on how they got the FDA permission. Google may have sent all the data regarding this temperature sensor for approval.

If the Pixel 8 Pro is able to tell the user's body temperature, then the FDA decides that the temperature sensor does function, is not dangerous, and is similar to other clinical thermometers. However, when the Pixel 8 Pro does not show body temperature data, then the FDA does not allow it.

Although the permit has been granted, keep in mind that the Pixel 8 Pro only measures surface temperature, not the overall temperature on the body. This body sensor is clearly different from the infrared thermometer which requires contact with the body.

Until now, the FDA has not given permission and there is no smartphone or smartwatch that has obtained a body temperature measurement permit by the FDA. Therefore, no one knows when Google will get permission from the FDA.
