JAKARTA - Mozilla is expanding its social media platform within Mastodon on a mission to make the internet better for everyone.

The company has opened its own server or instance, in the Mastodon term for Mozilla.social into private beta testing.

In his announcement, Mozilla did not intend to be completely permissive of free speech and being neutral was not part of his plan.

Mozilla says users will see a huge difference in the content moderation approach at Mozilla.social compared to other major social media platforms.

"We are not building a self-declared neutral platform. We believe that too often, neutrality is used as an excuse to allow behavior and content designed to harass and harm people from communities who are always abused and violent," Mozilla said, quoted Friday, May 5.

"Our content moderation plan is rooted in the goals and values expressed in our Mozilla Manifesto human dignity, inclusion, security, individual expression, and collaboration. We understand that individual expressions are often seen, particularly in the US, as the absolute right to freedom of speech in any way. Even if the cost is detrimental to others. We do not adhere to this view," he added.

In addition, Mozilla is also building a sand box with rules governing how users are involved with each other.

The rules may not be perfect from day one, but will include engagement with communities in open dialogue as various things develop.

Mozilla emphasized that anyone who doesn't share their views on content moderation and freedom of speech is completely free to go elsewhere if they don't like it.

"The most important thing for us is that the people who use instants we feel that their experience brings back more things that make socials great and reduces the dirt that makes them terrible," Mozilla explained.

Untuk bergabung dengan Mozilla.social, pengguna yang ingin menghindaknya harus masuk ke daftar penunggu, di mana mereka juga dapat secara opsial membagikan Twitter atau Mastodon mereka yang ada.

Currently, the agency only has 138 active users. In total, the server now has 250 users. Meanwhile, the beta version will be limited to around 1,000 users.

TechCrunch reports, Mozilla intends to maintain a small number for now and prioritizes reachable groups. Marginal communities, publishers and journalists will be prioritized.
