JAKARTA - Experts have mapped Spotify's most money-making songs around the world in a study that might surprise you.
According to the study, Lewis Capaldi, The Killers, and Lady Gaga are some of the artists who have been successful on Spotify.
'Mr Brightside' is the most money-making song in the UK, with The Killers making more than 1 million pounds in royalties (Rp18.3 billion) for the 2003 classic, according to NetCredit. Meanwhile, Scottish pop star Capaldi took the lead in Ireland for $160,403 for his ballad song, Someone You Loved, while Post Malone made 4,507,241 US dollars (Rp66.1 billion) for Sunflower in the US.
Post Malone's Spider-Man Soundtrack has generated the most revenue from any Spotify song, while The Weekend's Blinding Lights is at the top in 10 different countries.
"There's no doubt about it: streaming services like Spotify have revolutionized the way we listen to music. Where we used to enjoy music meant we had to fumble over a stack of CDs or pay (and wait) to download, Spotify instead offered 100 million songs with just one touch of buttons," NetCredit said, quoted by the Daily Mail.
"However, the world's most popular streaming service cannot access these songs for free - in 2021 alone, Spotify spent 7 billion US dollars (Rp103.4 trillion) in royalties for the music industry," NeoCredit said.'
Big names like Avicii also broke records in Sweden with Spotify revenues of US$653,671 (Rp9.6 billion), while James Arthur took over Singapore with US$162,162 (Rp2.3 billion).
On the other hand, Tom Odell's hit Another Love in 2013 was the most money-making song in Saudi Arabia with a value of US$35,287 (Rp521 million), and Lady Gaga's The Shallow took the top spot in Iceland with 16,904 (Rp249.8 million).
However, the results often look very different when categorized as a rock, hip-hop, Latin, and electronic dance music (EDM) genre.
To calculate this, researchers take into account Spotify's pay-per-stream rates in addition to Kworb's hit-chart streaming data.
It is known that artists generate around $0.005 USD - equivalent to ~0.004 - every time the song is played on Spotify.
Bestseller Sweater Weather belonging to The Neighborhood is not only the top revenue in the rock genre in the US but also in Poland and Romania.
However, Mr Brightside is again leading the UK for the most money-making rock hits, while also occupying the top positions in Australia and Ireland.
For the hip-hop category, Drake's One Dance hit was at the top in the UK and 13 other countries. These are mainly South and Central American countries including Chile, Argentina, Honduras, and Guatemala.
In the hip-hop category, Lucid Dreams' hits from Juice WRLD are the most profitable in the US with $4.371.446, while Rockstar from Post Malone controls Ireland and Canada.
When discussing EDM, Roses (Imandek Remix) from SAINt JHN became the most profitable hit in 14 countries, but produced the most in Canada with $369.492 (IDR 5.4 billion).
In England and Ireland, Joel Corry's Head & Heart song produced the most, with US$651,519 (Rp9.6 billion) and US$90,619 (Rp1.3 billion), respectively.
Elton John's PNAU Remix is also the most profitable in 12 other countries, but still produces the most in Mexico with 602.910 US dollars (IDR 8.9 billion).
