Indonesian Singer Sapardi Djoko Damono Colors Google Doodle Today

JAKARTA - Right on March 20, Google Doodle Indonesia commemorates the birthday of a poet who revolutionized Indonesia's liris poem, Sapardi Djoko Damono.

Not only famous as a poet, Sapardi is also known as a lecturer, literary observer, literary critic, and literary expert. So, how is Sapardi Djoko Damono's life history, a Google Doodle figure today? Listen here.

Sapardi Djoko Damono's Career Journey

Born on March 20 in Solo, Central Java in 1940, this man who is familiarly called Sapardi spent his childhood in the library reading the books he got and began writing poetry when he was in high school in Surakarta.

After high school, Sapardi continued his studies at the Faculty of Letters and Culture at Gadjah Mada University, the English Literature Department.

In 1969, Sapardi released his first collection of poems, Your sorrow is eternal. When most Indonesian poets focused on reflection and people's ideas, Sapardi's debut reflected human conditions.

Because of the success of the book, launching from the Kemendikbud website, Sapardi was confirmed as a literary professor at the University of Indonesia in 1995.

According to Google's statement, Sapardi then wrote three more batches of poems in his straightforward and introspective style before he received the ASEAN-sponsored Southeast Asian Poem Writing Award in 1986.

Based on his intention to promote art forms across the country, the husband of Wardiningsih then founded the Indonesian Literature Cendekiawan Association and served as chairman for three consecutive terms.

Then, in 1994, Sapardi published a book from his collection of poems entitled Rain in June. The University of Indonesia also chose Sapardi as the faculty dean and held a recital poetry in 2010 to celebrate his life's work.

Then in his career, Sapardi received a prestigious award including the Achmad Bakrie Award for Literature in 2003 and the Jakarta Academy Award in 2012.
